Why will passkeys end up in a mess for most people?

Big Tech’s competing interests will cause a big problem and this article will teach you how to avoid it.

In September 2022, Apple was the first to introduce passkeys to the world in their release of iOS 16. So far, only iPhones have access to this password-killing technology. It is speculated that iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura will be released on 24th October 2022, which will bring passkeys to iPads and Macs.

A few days ago, Google announced that they are bringing passkeys to Android and Chrome by first releasing it to developers. It is expected that passkeys will be available to general users by the end of the year.

Microsoft is yet to release passkeys in their Edge web-browser and Windows operating systems.

While I welcome the beginning of the end of the password, I am afraid that competing interests among all these Big Tech players is going to result in a mess for most people. 

As I wrote here, none of the Big Tech companies are addressing the major problem of passkeys. The solution they have in mind is a half-solution. Because it is a half-solution, what is going to happen is that for most people, their passkeys are going to end up in a mess.
